It’s the long-anticipated Idol Gives Back week, or IGB, which sounds like an insurance company or texting abbreviation (perhaps “I’ve Got Bupgus”?). Ryan opens the show by announcing, rather dramatically, that the audience will help to save lives tonight. Although when you think about it, we can give to charity any time to help save lives, but if we skip this drek, we can also save a couple hours of our own lives.

The mentor is Alicia Keys, Princess of Soul. Royal musician titles are so repetitive. Can’t whoever is in charge of this stuff try to shake things up a bit and choose a different one? Maybe Dutchess of Soul or Marchioness of Pop. Ryan tells us that Alicia changed the dynamic of R&B forever. I can’t comment on that because I didn’t know what the dynamic was before.

ALL MAXED OUT

 A Murghi/Zsus thriiller

We're down to the Top 18! (Why does that sound like a lot?)

It is a lot. We have only just begun. Which is great because I'm still going through Idol Withdrawal Syndrome.

Now, Murghi, you know I adore our Cat, but for some reason, she is dressed as a giant red boutonniere this week.

I too am not loving the look. Just the tiniest bit exaggerated. But handy if you're eating spaghetti and forgot your napkin.

NOW ENTIRELY WITH CHBEEB

A Murghi/Zsus Collaboration

Zsus, I'm totally out of shape. I haven't pointed a toe since we met last and now, don't I regret it!

Murghi, hear you. And I hope you don't mind if I post in a rust-colored font.  For I, too, am a little.. wait for it... "rusty."  I did, however, get a pedicure in preparation for our recapping.  After all, one's toes must always be well-polished when one is using them to pull the TV remote that much closer.

The thing that keeps me going is the prospect of Phillip Chbeeb, more Chbeeb and can I have a Chbeeb with a side order of Chbeeb sprinkled with Chbeeb and a big dollop of Chbeeb. Aside from that wriggly wonderman, there are only a few familiar faces/torsos, even though I did watch all the audition shows. So without any further ado, America, it's your top 20 dancers!

tdoug’s slightly belated (and, as ever, unsolicited) top 10 albums of 2009 PDF Print E-mail

10. Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear
The third album by these Brooklyn-based indie darlings loses the plot a little in the middle, but the high points are exhilarating. Mixing pop classicism (dig those Beach Boys harmonies) with the avant-garde ‘tude that defines the music scene in their home borough, the Bears have concocted a sound that’s as hummable as it is intricate. Top tracks: “Southern Point,” “Two Weeks.”

9. Tonight - Franz Ferdinand
Libidinous, literate dance rock from Scotland’s cheekiest combo.  Released in January of ’09, Tonight still sounds like the sexiest party on the planet a year later.  Why the irresistible singles “Ulysses” and “No You Girls” didn’t storm the Top 40 with the force of their biggest hit, “Take Me Out,” is an exasperating mystery. Get these songs a Timbaland or David Guetta remix, stat!

Here is my highly biased list of the best albums of the decade.  Leave your  picks in the comment section below!

10. Pocket Symphony – Air

Released in the midst of a full-on Air backlash, this 2007 album was unfairly dismissed by critics. It’s the lone “serious” work by this cheeky French chill-out duo, and I think it’s gorgeous from beginning to end. Bonus points for deadpan guest vocals by Jarvis Cocker and Neil Hannon.
